Dome Karukoski

Nació en Nicosia, Chipre, el 29 de diciembre 1976. Es hijo de una periodista finlandesa y un actor estadounidense. A los 5 años, su familia se trasladó a Finlandia. En 1999, ingresó a la Universidad de Arte y Diseño de Helsinki, lugar en el que ganó experiencia en anuncios publicitarios y cortometrajes. En el 2005, se graduó con su primer largometraje Tyttö, Sina olet tahti [La Bella y el Bastardo], un drama musical entre una joven cantante y un rapero. Esta película recibió muchos premios y nominaciones en el Festival de Cine Internacional de Noruega.
En el 2010, presentó Napapiirin sankarit [Odisea en Laponia]. Esta comedia, estilo road movie o película de carretera, trata de tres hombres que intentan encontrar un adaptador de televisión digital en Laponia, una fría región al norte de Europa, dividida entre Noruega, Rusia, Suecia y Finlandia. Fue estrenada en el Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival, en Francia. Allí ganó en dos categorías: Grand Prix y Coup de Coeur. También fue presentada en el Festival de Cine Internacional de Toronto. Se convirtió en la número uno en taquillas del 2010 en Finlandia.
Con Napapiirin sankarit, Dome Karukoski se consolidó como uno de los directores más importantes en Europa, al ser distribuida en 81 salas, en Finlandia, y vista por más de 125.000 espectadores en su estreno.

Sinopsis

La vida es bella para Janne, un joven finlandés treintañero… No hace nada en todo el día. Su novia Inari ya no puede más y le da un ultimátum: o encuentra un decodificador de TV antes del amanecer —hace tiempo que se lo pide— o ella se va para siempre. Janne no tiene otra opción que comenzar la búsqueda con sus dos mejores amigos, en los caminos nevados de Laponia; carreteras sembradas de obstáculos y sorpresas, donde su pereza legendaria no será de gran ayuda.

Dome Karukoski (born 1976 in Nicosia, Cyprus) is 

one of Finland’s most successful young film directors. 

All of his feature length films, Forbidden Fruit

(2009), The Home of Dark Butterflies (2008) and 

Beauty and the Bastard (2005) have been successes 

among the critics and the audience. His films have a 

total of 20 Finnish academy award nominations (Jussi). The first two ones 

won the audience award and he received the award for best director for Home 

of Dark Butterflies.

Beauty and the Bastard was chosen as the best debut feature film in the 

Nordic countries in 2005. The Movie was also his graduation film from the 

School of Motion Picture, University of Art and Design (UIAH).

The Home of Dark Butterflies was selected as the Finnish representative for 

the Oscars and Forbidden Fruit has already won 11 international awards. All 

of his films have attained over 100 000 paid admissions in Finland, which is 

the box office hit mark in Finland. His fourth feature film Lapland Odyssey is 

his first comedy.6

SYNOPSIS

Lapland Odyssey is a comedy about Janne, a man from Lapland in northern 

Finland, a man who has made a career out of living on welfare. Inari, his 

girlfriend, is tired of Janne’s incapability of getting a grip on life. Janne wasn’t 

even able to buy a digital TV box that Inari had given money for. Inari gives an 

ultimatum: a digital box needs to arrive by dawn or she leaves. Janne sets out 

into the night with his two friends to find a box. On their way to the city of 

Rovaniemi, Janne and his friends face many challenges, obstacles and 

temptations. They learn that they need to be daring. There´s no room to give 

into bitterness. The most important thing isn´t success, but rather the journey 

in itself.
